Explore Yellowstone in One Day: Must See Spots + Creative Travel Tips

Yellowstone is the kind of place that makes you stop and stare (like, really stare). Bubbling hot springs, wildlife that roams right in front of your car, and a landscape that feels like it’s from another planet. Every time I visit, I leave with a full camera roll and an even fuller creative spirit.

If you're planning a trip to Jackson Hole (or you’re already in town), a day trip to Yellowstone is 100% worth it! Here’s how I like to experience it and some tips to make the most of your time in the world’s first national park.

tip#1: start early

Trust me on this. Yellowstone is massive, and the earlier you get in, the better chance you’ll have of spotting wildlife. I love kicking things off with a sunrise drive and a thermos of coffee. It’s peaceful, golden, and honestly, kind of magical.

tip#2: don’t skip the classics

  • Old Faithful might be touristy, but it’s iconic for a reason. The timing is weirdly reliable and watching that geyser erupt against a big sky backdrop is a must see.

  • Grand Prismatic Spring is my personal favorite. As a painter, I always get inspired by the colors and shapes.

tip#3: capture the details

As a muralist and illustrator, I’m constantly looking at textures and tones and Yellowstone has both in spades. From layered rock formations to the iridescent colors of hot springs, this place is visual heaven. Don’t just snap wide shots, get close and look for the tiny details too.

Pro tip: I keep a travel sketchbook or my iPad with me so I can quickly capture ideas while they’re fresh.

tip#4: take a break in nature (and in town)

If you're looping back through West Yellowstone or heading back toward Jackson, I love stopping at a quiet picnic area or a cozy coffee shop along the way. It gives me time to reflect, review the day's photos, or sketch out mural ideas that popped up during the drive.

tip#5: tie it back to jackson hole

After a big Yellowstone day, returning to Jackson Hole feels like the best kind of home base. Whether you wind down at Snow King or grab a bite in Town Square, it's the perfect way to end a full and adventure packed day.
