THE BEST Things to Do in Canggu, Bali Indonesia

Bali is full of magical places, but Canggu stands out as a coastal town where you can balance relaxation, adventure, and creativity all in one trip. From endless surf breaks, golden sunsets to buzzing cafes, Canggu is the ultimate mix of tropical escape and modern traveler hub.

If you’re planning a Bali trip, I’m sharing everything you need to know to make the most of your time in Canggu.

Why Does Everyone Fall In Love With Canggu?

So, what is it about Canggu that captures the hearts of travelers from all over the world? Beyond the beaches and rice fields, it’s the vibe that keeps people coming back. Here are the three reasons people gravitate towards this city right now:

  1. Surf Culture. Canggu is one of Bali’s surf hotspots. Even if you’re not surfing, the laid back beach vibe makes it worth hanging around.

  2. Cafes and Restaurants. Canggu is a foodie’s dream place to go. The cafe culture here is stunning! With stylish spots serving everything from flat whites to locally inspired dishes.

  3. Sunsets. Sunsets here are pure magic. Golden skies, beach bars, and the perfect spot to end any Bali day. You won’t want to go to bed without going to the beach to watch sunset.

Best Things to do in Canggu

Canggu isn’t just about beaches. It’s about the vibe. This is the kind of place where you can surf at sunrise, sip coconut lattes at noon, and end your day watching the sky turn gold with new friends.

1. Catch Waves at Canggu Beaches

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced surfer, Canggu is one of the simplest spots in Bali to ride waves. If you’re starting out, book a local surf lesson. You’ll find plenty of instructors right on the beach and plenty of inexpensive surfboards to rent, too.

(Tip: a rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen are MUST haves for long days in the ocean. Here’s a list of my MUST HAVE travel essentials.)

2. Explore the Rice Paddies

Canggu is BUSY BUSY! The motorbike scene is a little crazy is you aren’t used to it. But you can escape that by taking a sunrise scooter ride through the rice fields by heading west toward Pererenan or further inland for quieter paths.

3. Cafe Hopping in Canggu

Canggu’s cafe scene is a WORLD CLASS. Smoothie bowls, fresh coffee, vegan dishes. You name it! You literally can’t go wrong. The amazing baguette and butter I had in the vlog was from FOLD Cafe - yummy food and good vibes.

4. Unwind at a Beach Club

Beach clubs are a big part of the Canggu experience. Perfect for golden hour views with music and cocktails. If you want something more upbeat, check them out.

What to Pack for Canggu?

Bali’s tropical climate means lightweight and versatile travel gear is key. Here are essentials that made my trip easier:

  • Travel Backpack. A sturdy backpack is a must for scooters and day trips. I used one similar to this water repellent adventure backpack.

  • Sunscreen. Bali sun is intense, always go reef-safe. Stop by a local surf shop to find the good stuff!

  • Don’t forget your GoPro. Perfect for shooting surf sessions or nearby waterfalls.

  • Comfortable Sandals. You’ll walk a lot between cafes and beaches. I bought a pair there because the shopping is fantastic!

Keep in mind…

  • Traffic can be tricky in Canggu. So plan ahead and leave early.

  • Scooter rentals are the easiest way to get around if you’re comfortable driving, cars take forever to get places!

  • Try local at Warungs, not just the trendy cafes. Not only is it budget friendly, but the flavors are amazing.

  • Stay in a villa with a pool or rice paddy views. It’s surprisingly affordable and gives you that serene Bali vibe.

  • Use Gojek to order in!! It’s amazing bang for your buck.
