Inside Nusa Penida: Bali’s Most Dramatic Island Escape
Bali has no shortage of stunning destinations, but Nusa Penida is on another level. A wild, untamed island where turquoise waves crash against towering cliffs and hidden beaches sparkle below. Just a short boat ride (only a half hour!) from the mainland, this rugged paradise is perfect for travelers craving adventure and insane beaches…aka that “I can’t believe this is real” feeling!
Whether you’re a photographer chasing the perfect shot or a traveler looking for something beyond the usual Bali itinerary this island will take your breath away.
Is Nusa Penida Worth the Trip?
Nusa Penida has that rare mix of mystery and magic (or maybe black magic, according to it’s history.) It’s definitely less polished than mainland Bali; the roads are bumpy, the hikes are semi-dangerous, but I suppose that’s what makes it unforgettable. I actually can’t believe this island isn’t more talked about, but I think soon it will the THE PLACE in Bali to go.
Here’s a glimpse inside this island escape and the spots you can’t miss!
Top Spots to Visit in Nusa Penida
Kelingking Beach (The T-Rex Viewpoint)
This is the spot everyone dreams of when they think of Nusa Penida. The T-Rex-shaped cliff is even more breathtaking in person (watch the full vlog to get my thoughts), with deep blue waters below and soft white sand tucked between jagged cliffs. The hike down is steep but rewarding… it’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime things you’ll never forget.
Tip: Go early in the morning before the crowds arrive and wear comfortable shoes for the hike down, not flip flops!
Angel’s Billabong & Broken Beach
These two natural wonders sit side by side on the island’s west coast. Angel’s Billabong is a crystal-clear tidal pool that glows in the sunlight, while Broken Beach is a massive ocean arch that’s perfect for drone shots or golden hour photos. You can’t really swim in either (it’s forbidden because of past accidents) but I did see boat trips going by Broken Beach and that will be on my agenda next trip!
Tip: Visit during low tide for calm waters when it is safer.
Diamond Beach & Thousand Islands Viewpoint
On the eastern side, Diamond Beach looks like something out of a dream. Turquoise water, palm-fringed cliffs, soft white sand…the viewpoint nearby offers one of the best sunrise spots in Nusa Penida. The locals carved out stairs into the cliff (twice!) and they are an adventure in themselves. But beware, though the water looks magical, it’s actually illegal to swim here because of the scary currents! Bring your swimsuit anyway to do some tide pool sitting and beach towel laying:)
Tip: Bring your camera and a drone! This is where Bali’s most dramatic landscapes truly shine.
Crystal Bay
After all the hiking and exploring, Crystal Bay is the perfect place to slow down. With calm waves, golden sand, and some of the best snorkeling on the island, it’s the ideal way to end your day in Nusa Penida. Since you can’t swim in a number of the beaches without the current potentially taking you out to sea, this is a solid spot to have a relaxing swim.
Tip: Pack a snorkeling mask or rent one on the beach, the coral reef here is full of life.
What to Pack for Nusa Penida?
Nusa Penida is beautiful but rugged, so pack light, but smart. These essentials made my trip so much easier:
Sturdy sandals or sneakers - the trails can be rocky and uneven.
Lightweight backpack - ideal for day trips and hikes.
Dry bag - to protect your phone and camera when you’re near the coast.
Reef-safe sunscreen - a MUST because the sun here is strong!
Reusable water bottle - stay hydrated while exploring in the heat.

Insider Tips for Visiting Nusa Penida
Getting there: take a fast boat from Sanur (30–45 minutes, anywhere from $5-$12, and up). Reserve it online from whichever company has the best reviews.
Getting around: roads are bumpy. Rent a scooter.
Stay connected: download offline maps. Service can be patchy, beware that Google Maps may lead you into the jungle.
Timing: Start early! Popular spots like Kelingking and Diamond Beach get busy fast.
Respect the locals: Many areas are near temples. So dress modestly and follow local etiquette.
