Exploring Komodo, Indonesia by Boat
After wrapping up our adventure in Nusa Penida, we set off toward one of Indonesia’s most untamed and unforgettable destinations, the Komodo National Park. This island chain feels like something out of a dream: pastel sunsets, turquoise bays, and prehistoric creatures roaming the land (yes, actual dragons!). It’s the kind of place that shows you how wild and beautiful the world is.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Our journey started from Labuan Bajo, the small coastal town that serves as the gateway to Komodo. From the moment our boat left the harbor, we were surrounded by rolling hills that looked painted in gold and green. Cruising between these islands, every turn revealed another hidden cove, a quiet beach, or a small fishing village tucked into the hills. Fun fact: tourism here is actually funding many of the locals’ livlihoods.
THE ICONIC KOMODO VIEW
If Komodo had a “Most Gorgeous” award, it would be Padar Island. We hiked up before sunrise, and by the time the sky turned pink and lavender, the view from the top felt UNREAL. Curving bays on all sides, each with different colored sand. Basically, you just stand still and think: Is this real life?
Tip: Even though there will be a lot of people you can still get good photos off on your own:)
MEETING THE DRAGONS
Of course, a trip to Komodo wouldn’t be complete without meeting its most famous residents, the Komodo Dragons. These massive lizards are as ancient as they look, lounging under the trees like they own the place (which, they do).
Seeing one up close was a little intimidating, they move slowly but the guides reminded us that they can run fast when they want to.
Tip: Always go with a local ranger and keep a respectful distance. They know the dragons’ behavior patterns best.
THE PINK BEACH
You can also find a Pink Beach in Komodo! A soft, blush colored stretch of sand that glows under the sun. The sand gets its color from crushed red coral, and the crystal clear water here is perfect for snorkeling.
We spent the afternoon swimming and floating between shades of pink, blue, and white. It was like stepping inside a watercolor painting - I was OBSESSED!!
LIFE ON THE BOAT
One of the best ways to explore Komodo is by liveaboard boat, and I can’t recommend it enough. Each morning we’d wake up anchored near a new island, coffee in hand, surrounded by turquoise water. By sunset, we’d be back on deck watching the sky light up in shades of gold and peach.
Those quiet evenings were some of my favorite moments. Swimming under pastel skies, sketching the views, or just sitting still watching the world slow down.
TIP: Bring along your own bottle of Rose to cap the final night on top of the boat!
A GLIMPSE OF LOCAL LIFE
Between the adventure stops, we also visited Komodo’s small fishing village tucked into one of the islands. The people were so warm and welcoming, and the houses are built on stilts and painted bright greens and blues. It was a beautiful reminder that while Komodo feels remote, it’s also full of life, community, and culture that thrives in harmony with nature.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Komodo was everything I hoped it would be. Wild, colorful, and full of wonder. It’s a destination that allows you to see things you can’t anywhere else, surrounded by nature that’s both raw and peaceful. If you’re planning a Bali trip, make the journey east. It’s a little off the beaten path, but so worth it!
