Why Malang’s Waterfalls Should Be on Your East Java Itinerary

When you think of East Java, your mind probably jumps to Mount Bromo or maybe even Ijen’s famous blue flames. But tucked away within and outside of the charming city of Malang lies a completely different kind of magic, cascading waterfalls, colorful streets, and cultural gems that make the journey unforgettable.

On our recent trip, Malang became one of those places that surprised me. It wasn’t just about chasing waterfalls (though that was epic); it was also about stumbling into spots that felt straight out of a painting like the Rainbow Village (Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan).

Malang’s most breathtaking waterfalls

Malang is surrounded by lush landscapes, which means waterfall hopping is basically a rite of passage here. Each waterfall has its own personality, from the dramatic cascades surrounded by cliffs to gentler streams.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Tumpak Sewu, often called the “Niagara of the East.” Standing at the viewpoint, watching the water pour down in perfect symmetry from the cliffs, felt absolutely surreal. The hike down to the base was an adventure in itself. Slippery and crazy steep (like I’m talking rickety ladders roped to the cliffside) but being surrounded by towering walls of water made every step worth it.

What stood out most in the Malang area was the mix of adventure and serenity. You’ll find spots like Tumpak Sewu that challenge you with treks and reward you with unforgettable views, as well as smaller falls where locals gather, creating a lively, welcoming vibe.

If you love photography * trust me * the waterfalls here, especially Tumpak Sewu, are the kind of places where every angle feels like a postcard.

The Rainbow Village

In between waterfall adventures, we wandered into one of Malang’s most unique attractions: Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan, better known as the Rainbow Village.

It’s an entire hillside neighborhood painted in vibrant blues, yellows, purples, and pinks. Murals cover walls and bridges, kids laugh in the alleyways (because people call this area their home!)… basically every corner feels alive with creativity. The joyful energy is a cool thing to experience.

What I loved most was the story behind it. The village was once considered a “run down”, but after a project turned it into this colorful masterpiece, it blossomed into one of Malang’s most beloved stops. It’s a practice that’s seen in multiple countries throughout the world.

Why Malang deserves a spot on your East Java itinerary?

With its waterfalls, cultural gems, and the uplifting spirit of the Rainbow Village, Malang feels like a destination that blends nature and creativity.

If you’re planning a trip to East Java, don’t just pass through Malang on your way to the mountains. Make it part of your journey. The city offers a balance of adventure and inspiration that’s hard to find anywhere else.
