Hiking Haze

$3,800.00

When I first moved to Jackson, I joined a casual Friday night kickball team. It was a blast and we were pretty good actually. One night after a game, a few of us were eating downtown at a Thai restaurant and my roommate turns to me and says “we’re climbing the grand tomorrow.” Now, people usually plan for this months in advance, training, and going with guides. I laughed it off, but she was serious. Two of the guys on our team had climbed it multiple times and were going the next day.

The next day came and me, not having any climbing gear or knowledge, went to the thrifty to grab a backpack and daypack, went to the store to bring mass amounts of snacks for everyone (too many according to everyone) and we set off in the afternoon. That evening I learned to rappel in the dark down some rocks, as practice.

We successfully climbed to the summit starting in the dark the next morning. The guys we went with were definite pros at climbing and super encouraging, which makes all the difference. That weekend left me feeling very accomplished…and sore:)

This painting is an ode to that morning as the sun rose and the Grand came into view. Not an exact replica of the moment, but it gives me the same feeling that something big is in store.

Original: 35”x 35” Mixed Media on cotton, framed in 2” deep gold wood
